capitalism etc stinks of ideological dogmatism and has very little basis in actual economics. Her critique of collectivism is a rather low-hanging fruit since the examples she refers to were quite extreme but the way she uncritically praises egoism. Ayn Rand offers pseudo-intellectualism and generally should be considered as a dangerous charlatan. That has a lot to do with the anti-intellectualism among the radical left - it is the mirror image of anti-intellectualism on the right. It is very reminiscent of all those angry feminists who started out in religious families and unable to think rationally chose emotional rebellion over reason. Mostly because like the Bible it has some relevance to their beliefs despite the majority of it being a work of a barbaric and backwards culture. It later degenerated into a cult that is widely criticized among most of American right although for some reason they still praise her books. While I don't see myself trying to finish Atlas Shrugged anytime soon, I am very interested in giving Fountainhead a try.Īyn Rand's philosophy is a pseudo-intellectual nonsense that insults both Nietzsche and classical liberal thinkers as well reader's intelligence. So I'm wondering, what are your opinions on her? She is undoubtedly one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, did you have a similar experience reading her works? Did you avoid them due to what some people say about them? I think she ultimately gets a bad deal due to her conservative bend in all her novels. Which is more a criticism on the philosophy of the plot, not so much on the book itself. I find so many critics deride her works as "embracing selfishness".

She certainly sticks to her philosophy and politics, and her female characters (especially in Anthem) aren't great, but I find her writing style and prose incredible. I typically hear nothing good about her works, and the general consensus among the internet folk is certainly poor, debasing Rand as a C tier author. I was raised by Goldwater/Reaganite conservative parents, so they encouraged me to read her work since I was a teenager, but I found Atlas Shrugged, while excellently written, a bit too heavy handed for me. I'm curious what others have thought of this book or Ayn Rands other novels. A what-if sort of plot that I find very interesting. It's about a dystopia where all decisions are decided via committee, and one man's escape from a statement where individuality is forbidden As a sort of lambast against Socialism and Communism, it's interesting to think about at least. I find her to be an excellent author, but it's a very typical plot for her works. I just finished Ayn Rands novella Anthem.
